How should one view the nature of Adam and Eve before they bit the apple?
I guess I’ve always had this notion of Adam and Eve being humans a few steps down the chain of evolution. Does the text imply a lack of mental ability? Or just a true lack of knowledge regarding good and evil? If you can give a sort of example to explain their thought processes, that’d be especially helpful.
Another question: If Adam or Eve were to commit what Christians would regard as a sin before biting the apple, would it still be a sin?
They were not stupid, if that is what you are asking but they were simple. They were not exposed to anything but good. What you might call a very sheltered life. As for the second question there was no other sin for them to commit. They were only given one command to follow, do not eat the fruit of that one tree. Anything and everything else they could think of (again in their very sheltered life) they could do or have. For example: Everything belonged to them so they could not steal. They were innocent and child like, no knowledge of good and evil.
