How do I replace a zipper with a corset style tie on the back of a dress?
I want to replace a zipper-back dress (satin) with a ribbon lace-up corset style back, with fabric underneath so it’s not open. I think I have a general idea of how to go about it. Just looking for details such as the order of the steps and any mistakes to avoid.
I’ve done it with Ren Faire costumes. You’ll need some fabric that matches it fairly well in at least in color for the facings and modesty panel. Iron on lightwieght pellon interfacing to about a half yard of this extra material. Carefully removed the zipper stitching with a thread ripper. Cut facings about 2″ wide for each side out of the pellon-bonded fabric and sew to both sides. Machine hem the long raw edges of one of the facings. Cut your modesty panel from the bonded fabric 9″ wide by the length of the zipper opening. Fold it in half and sew the raw sides to the raw side of the remaining facing. You have a few choices for the lacing holes. You can set metal grommets in with a grommet tool on both sides, through the top fabric and the inside bonded facing, or use a button hole attachment to put in embroidered button holes (make sure the modesty flap is folded back out of the way. What is actually prettiest on a satin dress is a bit more complicated, that is using loops of satin cord stitched into the seam on either side of the opening. To have this look nice you have to cut away at least an inch on either side of the zipper opening to created space between the sides for the lacing. it will also mean a wide gap at the bottom of the zipper opening but you can use the modesty panel to fold over that bottom part (after slashing the corners diagonally) and stitching them together.
You might want to stop in to a bridal shop and look at some gowns to see various ways this is done before deciding how you want to do it.
