Are Pedicures Good For Your Toes?

Beautiful toes and feet are nice to look at. It is absolutely fun and relaxing to have our feet wet, scrubbed, moisturized, massaged, and to have our toenails cleaned, filed, and then painted with funky colors. Top that with great stilletos, and you can turn heads with the click-clacking of your expensive Jimmy Choo heels. But for the unlucky ones, getting a pedicure can turn into a nightmare.

Bacteria can thrive in any unclean, moist environments. When they come into contact with our skin, it can lead to a serious infection, sores, fungus – or even death. Most often than not, most people do not bother to check the sanitation of the salons they go to. Although salons might seem like a safe place to cool down and get pampered, unbeknowsnt to the unsuspecting client, germs and bacteria can abound when salon owners do not observe proper cleansing and handling of tools they use. Because our feet is the dirtiest part of the body being cleaned by salons and spas, contamination of foot diseases between one client to another is possible, especially when your pedicurist or manicurist use the same tools in all of her clients.

For instance, when 200 people were infected with an outbreak in Missouri and Illinois last 2000 and 2004, the federal states implemented new regulations about proper hygiene and sanitation of foot spas. Inspectors toured the salons at sporadic intervals and would sometimes report complaints by clients. Although most of the problems and complaints were handled accordingly, breaches of sanitation rules by salons and spas are not made public, and most violations do not incur fines and suspensions. Also, records about violations are not made on a yearly basis, and most disciplinary actions are not organized by establishments. So people do not have any way of knowing which were the unsanitary salons or spas.

To ensure that you would not acquire an infection with your next visit at the salon, make it a point to inquire your pedicurist about how the tools are cleaned and handled. You can demand they use a brand new tool or at least one that has been properly cleaned and disinfected. If you are still wary about getting leftover germs or bacteria, you can bring your own cleaning tools for the pedicurist to use. Also, when making that pedicure appointment, make sure that you have not shaved or waxed your legs. Any openings in your skin can allow entry the unwanted entry of foreign organisms. Likewise, you also have to consider that you do not have infections or allergies of your own, such as yellow toe fungus or white line disease, to protect other clients from getting the same infection. You can always consult a foot specialist for more information about yellow toe help, and other foot diseases that you could contract from salons and spas.
